Wahibre Psamtik I, also known as Psammeticus or Psammetichus, 664-610 BC, King of the 26th Dynasty of Egypt. On the last day of a feast in Hephaestus temple the high priest brought out the golden phials for the libation, but counted wrongly and gave out eleven to the twelve kings therein assembled, Psammetichus who had not received a phial, removed his bronze helmet and poured the libation into it. The other kings remembering that the oracle had promised the sovereignty of all Egypt to whosoever should pour libations from a vessel of bronze exiled Psammetichus to the Nile delta marshes. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historical moment from ancient Egypt, showcasing the intriguing story of Wahibre Psamtik I, also known as Psammeticus or Psammetichus. As the King of the 26th Dynasty of Egypt during 664-610 BC, he found himself at the center of an unfortunate incident during a feast in Hephaestus temple. On this fateful day, the high priest mistakenly distributed only eleven golden phials for libation to the twelve kings gathered. Unfazed by this oversight and determined not to be left out, Psammetichus improvised with resourcefulness and humility. He removed his bronze helmet and poured the libation into it instead. However, what seemed like a simple act soon turned against him. The other kings recalled an oracle's prophecy that promised sovereignty over all Egypt to whoever poured libations from a vessel made of bronze. Fearing his potential claim to power, they exiled Psammetichus to the Nile delta marshes. This illustration from Cassells Universal History published in 1888 beautifully brings this ancient tale back to life. It serves as a reminder of both human fallibility and resilience in times when destiny seems stacked against us. Through its intricate details and vivid colors, we are transported back thousands of years ago to witness one man's determination amidst political intrigue and divine prophecies. Ken Welsh's skillful capture allows us to appreciate not only the historical significance but also admire how art can immortalize stories that would otherwise fade away with time.
