The Shiras moose, also known as the Shiras's moose or the white-tailed moose, is a subspecies of moose native to the Rocky Mountains and the western United States. Named after the American zoologist William Hornaday, who first described it in 1892, the Shiras moose is easily distinguished from its northern counterparts by its lighter coat, which provides excellent camouflage in the mountainous terrain. During the rut, which typically occurs in late September to early November, bull moose engage in a series of vocalizations and physical displays to attract females. The larger and more impressive the antlers, the more attractive the bull is to the cows.
