EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to the historic match between the British Lions and Rest of the World XV on April 16,1986. The image captures a moment of intense teamwork as Robert Jones, a prominent figure in British rugby union, skillfully passes the ball alongside his teammate Nigel Carr at Cardiff Arms Park. This exhilarating game not only showcased the incredible talent of these players but also served as a warm-up for the highly anticipated 1986 British Lions tour to South Africa. However, fate had other plans as controversy surrounding apartheid government forced the cancellation of this much-anticipated tour. It was an unfortunate turn of events that highlighted how sports can become entangled with political issues. The photograph is a testament to both the athleticism and camaraderie displayed by these athletes during this memorable encounter. Their dedication and passion for rugby shine through their determined expressions and precise movements captured in this snapshot. This remarkable image is one among two celebratory games held during that time period. The second match took place three days later at Twickenham Stadium between a Five Nations side and an Overseas Union side – an event that further emphasized international unity within rugby. Preserved by Colorsport Images and masterfully taken by Colin Elsey, this print serves as a timeless reminder of an era marked by sporting excellence intertwined with global affairs beyond mere commercial use.
