EDITORS COMMENTS

A poignant moment in horse racing history is captured in this print of Shergar, the iconic Irish Thoroughbred who dominated the sport for years. Paraded before his final ever race at Doncaster's Town Moor course on September 12th, 1981, Shergar exudes confidence and poise as he prepares to take on all comers. The image is a testament to the horse's impressive physique and athletic build, showcasing his muscular legs and powerful hindquarters. His gleaming coat glistens in the sunlight, while his expressive eyes seem to convey a sense of determination and focus. Despite being one of the most successful horses of his generation, Shergar's career was tragically cut short when he finished fourth in this very race. The shocking result would prove to be a harbinger of even greater misfortune - just days later, on September 17th, 1981, Shergar vanished from his stable at Warrenstown House in County Meath, Ireland. The subsequent investigation revealed that the horse had been kidnapped by members of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and was never seen again. The disappearance sent shockwaves through the equestrian world and remains one of the most enduring unsolved mysteries in racing history. This print serves as a poignant reminder of Shergar's untimely fate, capturing an instant before he would embark on his final journey - one that would ultimately prove to be his last.
