The badge on his chest refers to the England-France athletics meet at Stamford Bridge on 30th July 1927. England won by 66 points to 45, with Ashby making his international debut on the eve of his 20th birthday, at the time, the youngest-ever athlete to represent Great Britain in the 1500m/mile. That year he was the winner of the Midland 4-mile title, and would won the mile title a year later.
At the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics he represented Great Britain in the 1500m.
In 1966 he was an inaugural winner of the Coventry Award of Merit
