EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures a tribute to the brave men of Palace Road, Hackney, who answered the call to serve their country during World War I. The image shows a shrine that has been created around a Roll of Honour, which is proudly displayed on the wall of a house in Palace Road. The Roll of Honour, framed and adorned with flags, flowers, and a portrait of the recently deceased Lord Kitchener, serves as a powerful reminder of the local patriotism and sacrifice that characterized East London during this period. More than one hundred men from Palace Road had enlisted in the armed forces, and this Roll of Honour and its decorations was a tribute to their remembrance by the local community. Similar rolls of honour could be found in Balcorne Street, Havelock Road, Frampton Park Road, and Eaton Place. This system of recording local patriotism was instigated by the Reverend B.S. Batty, Rector of St. John of Jerusalem, South Hackney. The shrine, with its simple yet moving display, speaks volumes about the deep sense of loss and pride felt by the community during the war. The flags, which fly at half-mast, and the flowers, which have been carefully placed around the portrait of Lord Kitchener, add to the solemnity of the scene. The portrait itself, with its stern expression and military uniform, serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the men of Palace Road and the wider community. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the impact of World War I on local communities and the enduring power of remembrance and tribute. It is a testament to the bravery and patriotism of those who served and the deep sense of loss felt by those they left behind.
