Massena: A Pride of the French Navy in the Pre-Dreadnought Era This evocative photograph captures the majestic presence of the French pre-dreadnought battleship, Massena, in the early 1900s. Commissioned in the late 1890s, Massena was part of a group of five battleships ordered by the French Navy in response to the British Royal Sovereign class. Named in honor of the esteemed Marshal of France, Andre Massena, this warship was a symbol of French naval power and military prowess. The Massena-class battleships were characterized by their imposing size and impressive armament. With a length of 125 meters and a beam of 21.5 meters, Massena displaced over 13,000 tons. Armed with a main battery of ten 274mm guns and secondary batteries of sixteen 135mm and sixteen 105mm guns, she was a formidable force to be reckoned with.
