EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored botanical print showcases three fascinating plants: the Lesser Throatwort, Ivy-leaved, and Corn Violet Bellflower. Originally depicted in Joshua Hamilton's "Culpeper's English Family Physician; or Medical Herbal, Enlarged, with Several Hundred Additional Plants, Principally from Sir John Hill," published in London by W. Locke in 1792, this copperplate engraving offers a detailed and accurate representation of these natural wonders. The Lesser Throatwort (Lathraea clandestina) is a parasitic plant, with a distinctive heart-shaped leaf and tubular, violet-blue flowers. Its name derives from its ability to parasitize the roots of other plants, drawing nutrients from them. The Ivy-leaved Corn Violet (Viola hederacea) is a small, herbaceous plant with heart-shaped, green leaves and violet flowers. It is commonly found in woodlands and meadows, and is known for its ability to grow epiphytically on other plants. The Corn Violet Bellflower (Omphalodes verna) is a low-growing, herbaceous plant with bell-shaped, blue or purple flowers and narrow, lanceolate leaves. It is native to Europe and Asia and is often found in open, grassy areas. These beautiful and intricately detailed botanical illustrations serve not only as works of art, but also as valuable records of the natural world. They provide insight into the plants' morphology, as well as their medicinal and cultural uses. Hamilton's "Culpeper's English Family Physician" was a popular and influential herbal, and this print is a testament to the importance of botanical knowledge during the late 18th century.
