EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored print depicts the Brown Creeper, Certhia familiaris, a small, cryptic bird native to the Old World. The Brown Creeper is a member of the kinglet family and is distinguished by its unique foraging behavior, in which it clings to tree bark with its strong feet and curved bill, and creeps upwards, gleaning insects from the bark and hidden crevices. The Brown Creeper in this print was meticulously drawn and engraved by the renowned Irish naturalist and artist, Edward Donovan, for his seminal work, "A Natural History of British Birds." Published in London between 1794 and 1819, Donovan's work was one of the most comprehensive and accurate records of British birds at the time, featuring stunning illustrations produced using the copperplate technique. The Brown Creeper is depicted here in its typical brown plumage, with a distinctive white stripe running down its flanks. The intricate details of the bird's feathers, as well as the textures of the tree bark and the shadows cast by the bird, are all rendered with remarkable precision and artistry. The print also includes a descriptive label, providing the bird's scientific name, Certhia familiaris, and a brief description of its habits and habitat. This beautiful and historically significant print offers a glimpse into the natural history of the Brown Creeper, as well as the remarkable skill and dedication of Edward Donovan and the artisans who brought his work to life through the copperplate process.
