Detail of carving of Judgement of Paris on one of the

Detail of carving of Judgement of Paris on one of the decorative panels in the facade of the Roman theatre at Sabratha, one of the most remarkable in the Roman world. This stone carving shows Hermes and Paris on the right. The facade of the theatre consists of three tiers, with 108 fluted Corinthian columns that rise over 20 m above the stage. The stage is 43m long, 9m wide and overlooks the orchestra area. Three large concave niches show the personification of Rome and Sabratha (central panel), the Nine Muses (Left panel), and the Three Graces and Judgement of Paris (right panel). The theatre seated 5000 and today can seat 1500. Rebuilt by Italian archaeologists Giacomo Caputo and Giacomo Guidi in the 1920s, the original theatre was begun in AD190 under the reign of Commodus. It was still used in the 4th century AD but was destroyed by an earthquake in AD365

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing detail of the carving depicting the famous Judgement of Paris on one of the decorative panels in the facade of the Roman theatre at Sabratha. The intricate stone carving portrays Hermes and Paris, capturing a moment frozen in time. The Roman theatre itself is an architectural marvel, boasting three tiers adorned with 108 fluted Corinthian columns that soar over 20 meters above the grand stage. Stretching across 43 meters in length and 9 meters in width, this magnificent stage overlooks the orchestra area. Three expansive concave niches steal attention, each showcasing significant figures from Roman mythology. In the central panel stands Rome and Sabratha personified, while to their left are depicted the Nine Muses. Finally, on their right stand gracefully carved Three Graces alongside Judgement of Paris. Originally constructed under Emperor Commodus's reign in AD190, this ancient theater seated an impressive audience capacity of 5000 people but can now accommodate up to 1500 spectators after being rebuilt by Italian archaeologists Giacomo Caputo and Giacomo Guidi during the 1920s. Despite enduring natural disasters throughout history, including its destruction by an earthquake in AD365, this historic site still stands as a testament to Roman architecture and culture within Northern Libya's Sahara Desert region. Immerse yourself in awe-inspiring ruins like these that transport you back to ancient times filled with gods and mythological figures—a true treasure for cultural tourism enthusiasts seeking to explore North Africa's rich heritage.
