Norfolk Island, South Pacific

Norfolk Island was colonised by Great Britain as part of its settlement of Australia in 1788. The island served as a convict penal settlement until May 1855, except for an 11-year hiatus between 1814 and 1825, when it was abandoned. In 1856 permanent civilian residence on the island began when it was settled from Pitcairn. In 1901, the island became a part of the Commonwealth of Australia which it has remained until this day

EDITORS COMMENTS
Capturing the rich history of Norfolk Island, this stunning print by Steve Daggar Photography takes us on a visual journey to the South Pacific. Once a convict penal settlement under British rule, Norfolk Island stands as a testament to Australia's colonial past. The island's story unfolds through its picturesque landscapes and remnants of its tumultuous past. From the momentous year of 1788 when Great Britain first colonized Australia, Norfolk Island played an integral role in housing convicts until 1855. However, it experienced an intriguing period between 1814 and 1825 when it was abandoned altogether. It wasn't until settlers from Pitcairn arrived in 1856 that permanent civilian residence began on this island. As we gaze upon this remarkable photograph, we are transported back in time to witness the resilience and determination of those who called Norfolk Island home throughout its complex history. Today, as part of the Commonwealth of Australia since 1901, Norfolk Island continues to thrive with its unique blend of cultural heritage and natural beauty. Steve Daggar Photography skillfully captures the essence of this enchanting destination; every detail is meticulously preserved within his lens. This print serves as a reminder that beyond its breathtaking scenery lies a tale woven with triumphs and challenges that have shaped both Norfolk Island and Australia at large.
