Aerial view of island in Lake Killamperpunna

Aerial view of small island in the ephemeral Lake Killamperpunna in outback South Australia. This lake fills from Cooper Creek only when good rainfall in the upper catchment is able to travel all the way down through the desert to the Lake Eyre system. A large number of eucalyptus trees are inundated by the flooding. Islands like the one seen here are used by numerous breeding waterbirds that travel long distances to breed here when conditions are good

EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial print captures the mesmerizing beauty of an island nestled in Lake Killamperpunna, located in the remote outback of South Australia. The ephemeral nature of this lake means that it only fills from Cooper Creek when substantial rainfall occurs in the upper catchment area and travels through the desert to reach the Lake Eyre system. As a result, this rare phenomenon inundates a multitude of eucalyptus trees with water during flooding events. The small island showcased in this photograph serves as a sanctuary for various breeding waterbirds that embark on long-distance journeys to breed here when conditions are favorable. These avian travelers find solace on these islands amidst their arduous journeys, seeking refuge and safety for their offspring. From high above, one can truly appreciate the vastness and untouched splendor of this natural landscape. The contrasting hues of blue from both sky and water create a serene atmosphere that is further accentuated by the lush greenery dotting the island's surface. Whitworth Images has masterfully captured this breathtaking scene, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in its tranquility and marvel at nature's ability to thrive against all odds. This photograph serves as a reminder of our planet's resilience and showcases Australia's unique ecosystems found within its diverse landscapes.
