EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1896, showcasing an exquisite illustration of a koala and wombat in their natural habitat in Australia. The koala, scientifically known as Phascolarctus cinereus, is a remarkable arboreal herbivorous marsupial that is endemic to Australia. It holds a special place in our hearts as it stands as the sole surviving member of its family, Phascolarctidae. Interestingly enough, its closest living relatives are wombats from the Vombatidae family. On the other hand, we have the common wombat or Phascolomys ursinus featured alongside the koala. Also native to Australia, this species of marsupial belongs to one of three extant species of wombats and falls under the genus Vombatus. Known by various names such as coarse-haired wombat or bare-nosed wombat, this creature adds another layer of uniqueness to Australian wildlife. The original edition from which this print was derived can be traced back to "Meyers Konversations-Lexikon" in 1896 – an invaluable resource for knowledge seekers at that time. With meticulous attention to detail and skillful artistry by Specht (the illustrator), this image transports us into a world where these iconic animals roam freely amidst lush Australian landscapes. As we admire this historical piece preserved within my own archives, let us appreciate both nature's wonders and human efforts dedicated to capturing them through art.
