Mountain Resort and its Outlying Temples, Chengde is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the city of Chengde, China. It was built in the 18th century as an imperial summer retreat for the Qing Dynasty emperors. The site consists of two parts: the Mountain Resort itself and its outlying temples. The Mountain Resort is an immense complex of palaces, pavilions, gardens and lakes surrounded by a wall with four gates. The Outlying Temples are eight Buddhist temples located in the surrounding hills that were built to provide spiritual guidance for the emperor during his stay at the resort.
