Carleton Watkins Collection

Carleton Watkins (1829-1916) was an American photographer who is best known for his large-format photographs of the American West. He was born in Oneonta, New York and moved to California in 1851. Watkins began photographing the Yosemite Valley in 1861 and his work helped to bring attention to the area and its natural beauty. His photographs were used by Congress as evidence when it passed legislation protecting Yosemite from development. He also photographed mining operations, Native Americans, and other aspects of life in the West.
