Thomas Worlidge Collection

Thomas Worlidge (1700-1766) was an English painter and engraver. He was born in London and apprenticed to a coach painter, but his true passion lay in fine art. He studied under the tutelage of Sir Godfrey Kneller, one of the most renowned portrait painters of the time. Worlidge's works were mainly portraits, but he also painted landscapes and historical scenes. His style was influenced by Dutch Baroque painting and he often used vivid colors to create dramatic effects. He is best known for his mezzotints, which are prints made from copper plates that have been etched with acid or roughened with a burin tool. His works can be found in many galleries around the world including the National Portrait Gallery in London and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Thomas Worlidge is remembered as one of England's most influential artists during the 18th century who left behind a lasting legacy through his artwork.
