Michael Wolgemut Collection

Michael Wolgemut was a German artist, printmaker, and publisher who lived in the late 15th century. He is best known for his woodcuts, which were used to illustrate books and other publications. He was also a master of painting and drawing. Wolgemut was born in Nuremberg, Germany and worked as an apprentice to the painter Hans Pleydenwurff from 1472-1477. In 1490 he became a master painter himself and opened his own workshop in Nuremberg. His most famous work is the woodcut series The Triumphal Procession of Emperor Maximilian I (1493-1519). This series consists of over 2000 woodcuts that depict Maximilian's life story from birth to death. Wolgemut's work has been praised for its technical skill as well as its beauty and detail. His influence on German art can still be seen today through his prints, paintings, drawings, and book illustrations that have survived throughout the centuries.
