John Wollaston Collection

John Wollaston (1710-1776) was an English portrait painter and engraver. He was born in London, the son of a Huguenot goldsmith, and trained under the engraver George Vertue. Wollaston is best known for his portraits of prominent figures in British society during the 18th century, including members of the royal family such as King George III and Queen Charlotte. He also painted a number of self-portraits throughout his career. His works are characterized by their strong sense of realism and attention to detail; he often used subtle colors to create a more realistic effect in his paintings. In addition to painting, Wollaston also produced several prints and mezzotints during his lifetime. He died in 1776 at the age of 66 after suffering from gout for many years. His work continues to be highly regarded today as an important part of British art history from this period.
