George Moutard Woodward Collection

George Moutard Woodward (1760-1809) was an American painter and engraver who is best known for his portraits of prominent figures in the early United States. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and trained under the renowned Benjamin West. Woodward's works were highly sought after during his lifetime, and he painted many prominent figures including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton and John Adams. He also created a series of engravings depicting the Battle of Bunker Hill which were widely circulated throughout the country.
