Abraham Willaerts Collection

Abraham Willaerts (1577-1664) was a Dutch painter and draftsman of the Baroque period. He is best known for his marine paintings, which depict ships in battle and other naval scenes. He also painted landscapes, portraits, and religious works. Willaerts was born in Amsterdam and trained under the Flemish painter Gillis van Coninxloo. His work was highly sought after by wealthy patrons throughout Europe, including King Charles I of England. He was appointed court painter to the Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg in 1621, where he continued to produce works until his death in 1664.
