Francis Wheatley Collection

Francis Wheatley (1747-1801) was an English portrait and landscape painter. He was born in Wild Court, Covent Garden, London and studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1769 to 1775. His early work consisted of portraits of wealthy patrons and landscapes of the English countryside. He later moved to Ireland where he painted many Irish landscapes and portraits of prominent Irish figures including Lord Charlemont, Sir John La Touche, and Lord Castlereagh. Wheatley's works were highly sought after by both British and American collectors during his lifetime.
