Edward Whymper Collection

Edward Whymper (1840-1911) was a British artist, engraver and mountaineer. He is best known for his first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865, which resulted in the deaths of four of his companions. He also made other notable ascents including Monte Rosa, the Grandes Jorasses and Mont Blanc. As an artist he produced numerous sketches and watercolours during his travels around Europe and North America. His works were published in various books including Scrambles Amongst The Alps (1871) which documented his climbs as well as illustrations from other mountaineers. He was also an accomplished engraver producing many prints depicting mountain scenes. His work continues to be admired today for its technical skill as well as its beauty and historical significance.
