After his studies, he traveled to Italy where he became influenced by the works of Italian painters such as Pompeo Batoni and Anton Raphael Mengs. Upon his return to Sweden, he became a successful portrait painter, painting many members of the Swedish royal family as well as other prominent figures in society. He also painted genre scenes depicting everyday life in Sweden during this time period.
