John Quincy Adams Ward Collection

John Quincy Adams Ward (1830-1910) was an American sculptor and one of the most important figures in the history of American sculpture. He is best known for his public monuments, which include the Statue of Liberty and the Washington Monument. He also created many smaller works, such as busts and portrait medallions. Ward was born in Urbana, Ohio and studied at the National Academy of Design in New York City before moving to Rome to study with Italian masters. He returned to America in 1857, where he established a successful career as a sculptor. His works can be found all over America, including Central Park in New York City and Philadelphia's Fairmount Park. In addition to his sculptures, Ward wrote extensively on art theory and aesthetics; his writings are still consulted by modern scholars today.
