Suzanne Valadon (1865-1938) was a French painter, artist's model, and art instructor. She was born in Bessines-sur-Gartempe, France and began her career as an artist's model in Montmartre. She studied with artists such as Pierre Puvis de Chavannes and Gustave Courtois before becoming an independent artist in her own right. Her works were exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants from 1894 onwards. Valadon is best known for her bold use of color and strong brushstrokes to create scenes of everyday life that are both modern and timeless. Her works have been featured in numerous exhibitions throughout Europe, including the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Her work has also been featured on stamps issued by France Poste since 1967.
