Willem van de Velde was a Dutch painter and draughtsman who specialized in marine art. He was born in Leiden, Holland, in 1633 and is best known for his seascapes and naval battles. He spent most of his life painting the sea, ships, and other maritime scenes. His works are highly detailed with accurate depictions of the ships' rigging, flags, sails, masts, anchors and other equipment. Van de Velde's paintings were so realistic that they were used by the Royal Navy as reference material for their own vessels.
