John Varley Collection

John Varley (1778-1842) was an English landscape artist and watercolourist of the Romantic era. He is best known for his atmospheric landscapes, which often featured a distant view of London. He was born in London, and studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1796 to 1802. Varley's work was highly acclaimed during his lifetime; he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy from 1802 to 1837, as well as exhibiting with other leading artists such as JMW Turner and John Constable. His work has been described as having a "subtlety of colouring" that captures "the moods of nature". Varley also wrote extensively on art theory and technique, including A Treatise on Landscape Painting (1838). His influence can be seen in many later British landscape painters such as John Brett and Samuel Palmer.
