Carl Van Vechten Collection

Carl Van Vechten (1880-1964) was an American writer, photographer, and patron of the arts. He was a key figure in the Harlem Renaissance and an important advocate for African American literature and culture. He wrote novels, short stories, plays, essays, and music criticism. As a photographer he captured portraits of many prominent figures from the 1920s to 1960s including Langston Hughes and James Baldwin. His photographs are now part of the permanent collections at several museums including The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
