Utagawa Toyokuni Collection

Utagawa Toyokuni (1769-1825) was a Japanese artist of the Edo period. He is best known for his prints and paintings of kabuki actors, which were popular during the time. He was one of the most influential ukiyo-e artists of his era, and is often referred to as “the great master” or “the godfather” of ukiyo-e art. His works are characterized by their bold lines, dynamic compositions, and vivid colors. Toyokuni's work has been widely exhibited in Japan and abroad, including at the British Museum in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. His influence can be seen in many contemporary Japanese artists who continue to draw inspiration from his work today.
