James Jacques Joseph Tissot (1836-1902) was a French painter and illustrator. He was born in Nantes, France, and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His early works were mostly portraits of fashionable women and genre scenes of everyday life. In 1871 he moved to London where he became a successful society painter, producing many paintings of high society figures such as Lady Agnew of Lochnaw (1892). He also produced illustrations for books such as The Bible and Shakespeare's plays.
