James Tassie Collection

James Tassie (1735-1799) was a Scottish gem engraver and medallist who is best known for his cameo portraits. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and apprenticed to a goldsmith at the age of 14. His skill in engraving gems led him to be employed by the British Museum, where he created some of his most famous works. He also produced portrait medallions of famous people such as George III and Queen Charlotte. His work was highly sought after during his lifetime, although it has since been overshadowed by more modern artists. Nevertheless, James Tassie's cameo portraits remain some of the most iconic pieces from the 18th century art world.
