Ambroise Tardieu Collection

Ambroise Tardieu (1788-1841) was a French engraver and cartographer. He is best known for his detailed maps of France and its provinces, as well as for his illustrations of the Napoleonic Wars. He was born in Paris and trained under the engraver Nicolas-Martin Petit. In 1810, he was appointed to the Imperial Topographical Service, where he worked until 1815. During this time, he created many maps of France and its provinces which were used by Napoleon's armies during their campaigns. After Napoleon's defeat in 1815, Tardieu continued to produce maps for various publishers until his death in 1841. His work is still highly regarded today for its accuracy and detail, with many examples held in public collections around the world.
