Katsukawa Shuncho Collection

Katsukawa Shuncho (1743-1812) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist of the Edo period. He was born in Edo (now Tokyo), and his real name was Katsukawa Shunshō. He is best known for founding the Katsukawa school, which specialized in actor prints and portraits, as well as bijinga (pictures of beautiful women). His works were characterized by their bold lines and dynamic compositions. He also produced many surimono, or privately commissioned prints. His influence extended beyond his own school to other printmakers such as Utamaro, who adopted his style of depicting actors in their roles. His work helped to popularize the art form of ukiyo-e during a time when it was still relatively unknown outside Japan.
