Francesco Solimena Collection

Francesco Solimena (1657-1747) was an Italian painter of the Baroque period. He was born in Canale di Serino, near Avellino, and studied under Francesco di Maria in Naples. Solimena's work is characterized by its grandiose scale and dramatic lighting effects. His most famous works include the frescoes of the Cappella Sansevero in Naples, as well as his numerous altarpieces for churches throughout Italy. He also painted many portraits of prominent figures from his time, such as Pope Clement XI and King Charles III of Spain. Solimena's style combined elements from both Caravaggio and Luca Giordano, creating a unique blend that is still admired today. His influence can be seen in later Neapolitan painters such as Gaspare Traversi and Domenico Antonio Vaccaro.
