William Stukeley Collection

William Stukeley (1687-1765) was an English antiquarian and physician who is best known for his pioneering archaeological work on Stonehenge and Avebury. He made detailed drawings of the sites, which were published in 1740 as Abury: A Temple of the British Druids. His research into ancient monuments led him to believe that they had been built by ancient Britons, rather than Romans or Saxons. He also wrote several books on Druidism, including Stonehenge: A Temple Restor'd to the British Druids (1740). In addition to his archaeological work, he was a Fellow of the Royal Society and a member of the Society of Antiquaries. He also wrote several books on natural history and medicine. His legacy lives on today in his extensive writings about prehistory and archaeology, which have helped shape our understanding of these topics.
