John Hanning Speke Collection

John Hanning Speke was an English explorer and army officer who is best known for his exploration of the African Great Lakes region. He was born in 1827 and joined the British Army in 1844. In 1854, he was sent to East Africa to join a mission led by Richard Burton to explore the source of the Nile River. After Burton's departure, Speke continued his exploration and became the first European to discover Lake Victoria in 1858. He later wrote several books about his travels, including Journal of the Discovery of the Source of Nile (1863). His discoveries helped map out much of east Africa and opened up trade routes between Britain and other countries in that region. He died suddenly at age 37 while on a hunting trip near Lake Tanganyika in 1888.
