John Raphael Smith Collection

John Raphael Smith (1752-1812) was an English painter and mezzotint engraver. He was born in the city of Derby, England and trained as a painter under his father, Thomas Smith. He moved to London in 1775 and established himself as a successful portrait artist. His works were exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1780 onwards. In addition to painting portraits, he also produced landscapes and history paintings. He is best known for his mezzotint engravings of historical figures such as William Shakespeare and John Milton, which were widely distributed throughout Europe during the late eighteenth century. His work has been praised for its technical skill and attention to detail. He died in 1812 at the age of 60 after suffering from ill health for several years prior to his death.
