Charles Hamilton Smith (1776-1859) was an English artist, naturalist, and soldier. He was born in London and studied painting at the Royal Academy of Arts. He served in the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars and later became a curator of prints at the British Museum. In 1815 he published his first book on zoology, which included illustrations of animals from around the world. Smith also wrote several books on birds and mammals, as well as a book on fish. His works were widely admired for their accuracy and detail. In addition to his scientific work, Smith was also an accomplished painter who exhibited at both the Royal Academy and British Institution galleries in London. He is remembered today for his contributions to science as well as his artistic talent.
