He studied under the Flemish painter Jacques d'Arthois and later became a member of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. He was appointed as the first director of the French Academy in Rome, where he stayed for four years, before returning to Paris to become court painter to King Louis XV. His works were highly sought after by aristocrats and royalty alike, with many of his paintings being displayed at Versailles.
