Emile Signol Collection

Emile Signol was a French painter and printmaker who is best known for his landscapes and scenes of everyday life. He was born in 1804 in the town of Saint-Etienne, France, and began his artistic career as an apprentice to a local painter. In 1823 he moved to Paris where he studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts under the tutelage of Jean-Victor Bertin. His work was heavily influenced by the Barbizon school of painting, which focused on naturalistic depictions of rural life. Signol's works are characterized by their vivid colors and attention to detail; they often depict people interacting with their environment or engaged in everyday activities such as fishing or harvesting crops. He also produced many prints throughout his career, including etchings, lithographs, and wood engravings. Signol died in 1892 at the age of 88; today his works can be found in many museums across Europe including The Louvre and The Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
