Joseph Severn Collection

Joseph Severn (1793-1879) was an English portrait and subject painter, best known for his association with the poet John Keats. Severn was born in Hoxton, London and studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1811 to 1815. He then traveled to Italy in 1816, where he met Keats and became his friend and companion until the poet's death in Rome two years later. Severn painted several portraits of Keats during this time, including a posthumous one that is now held by the National Portrait Gallery in London. After returning to England, Severn continued painting portraits as well as genre scenes inspired by his Italian travels. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy until 1870 and also worked as an art teacher for many years. His works are held by various galleries around Britain including Tate Britain and The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.
