Henry Courtney Selous Collection

Henry Courtney Selous (1803-1890) was an English artist and engraver. He was born in London and studied painting at the Royal Academy Schools. He became a successful portrait painter, exhibiting his works at the Royal Academy from 1825 to 1885. Selous also produced a number of landscapes, seascapes and genre scenes, as well as illustrations for books such as The Arabian Nights Entertainments (1838). His work is characterized by its attention to detail and realism. He also wrote several books on art theory including The Art of Engraving (1843) which discussed the techniques of etching and engraving. Selous' work is highly regarded today for its technical skill and beauty, making him one of the most important British artists of his time.
