James Sayers Collection

James Sayers (1748-1823) was an English artist and engraver who worked in London. He was a member of the Royal Academy, and his works were exhibited at the Society of Artists from 1770 to 1778. He is best known for his portraits, but he also produced landscapes, genre scenes, and illustrations for books. His work is characterized by its delicate line work and subtle use of colour. He was influenced by Dutch masters such as Rembrandt and Rubens, as well as Italian Renaissance painters such as Titian and Raphael. His most famous works include portraits of George III's sons Frederick Duke of York and William Duke of Clarence; a portrait of Sir Joshua Reynolds; a series on Shakespeare's plays; illustrations for John Milton's Paradise Lost; and designs for Wedgwood pottery.
