George the Elder Scharf Collection

George the Elder Scharf was a German-born British artist and art historian. He is best known for his work as a topographical draughtsman, which he began in 1820. His drawings of London and other cities were used to illustrate books, magazines, and newspapers. He also wrote several books on art history, including A History of Engraving and Etching (1838) and A History of the Royal Academy (1860). In addition to his work as an artist, Scharf was also an active member of the Royal Academy from 1829 until his death in 1860. He served as its Secretary from 1845 until his death in 1860, a highly respected figure in British art circles during his lifetime and is remembered today for both his artistic achievements and contributions to art history.
