Joachim von Sandrart Collection

Joachim von Sandrart (1606-1688) was a German Baroque painter, art theorist, and art historian. He is best known for his 1675 book Teutsche Academie der Edlen Bau-, Bild- und Mahlerey-Künste (The Academy of the Noble Arts of Architecture, Painting and Sculpture), which was the first comprehensive survey of German art. Sandrart also wrote several other books on painting techniques and aesthetics. He traveled extensively throughout Europe to study the works of various artists, including Rubens in Antwerp and Poussin in Rome. His paintings are characterized by their bright colors and dramatic compositions that often depict religious or mythological scenes. In addition to his artistic accomplishments, he also served as court painter for several European rulers including Duke Johann Georg II of Saxony-Weimar.
