Carlo Saraceni (1579-1620) was an Italian painter of the early Baroque period, active mainly in Venice and Rome. He was born in Venice, and his early training included apprenticeship with Domenico Fetti and a brief period with the Carracci family in Bologna. His mature style is characterized by a strong emphasis on color, light, and atmosphere. He often painted religious subjects such as the Virgin Mary or St. John the Baptist, but he also painted mythological scenes such as Diana and Actaeon or Apollo and Marsyas. His work had a significant influence on later generations of painters including Guercino, Rubens, Poussin, Rembrandt, Tiepolo and Guardi. Saraceni's works are found in many important collections around the world including The Louvre Museum in Paris.
