William Bell Scott Collection

William Bell Scott (1811-1890) was an English artist and poet. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and studied at the Trustees' Academy in Edinburgh before moving to London in 1835. He became a successful portrait painter and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1835 to 1867. In addition to his painting career, he wrote poetry and published several books of verse. His most famous work is The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner (1834). He also wrote a series of illustrations for Alfred Lord Tennyson's Idylls of the King (1859). Scott was an important figure in the Pre-Raphaelite movement, which sought to revive medieval art techniques. He influenced many other artists including Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Edward Burne-Jones. His works are held in collections around the world including Tate Britain, National Gallery of Scotland, British Museum, Victoria & Albert Museum, and Yale Center for British Art.
