Henry Morton Stanley Collection

Henry Morton Stanley was a Welsh-American journalist and explorer who is best known for his exploration of Africa and his search for missionary and explorer David Livingstone. Stanley was born in Wales in 1841, but he was abandoned by his parents at a young age. He eventually moved to the United States, where he enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War. After the war, he became a journalist and began writing about his travels around the world. In 1871, Stanley set off on an expedition to find Livingstone in Africa, which he famously accomplished with the words "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" The two men went on to explore much of East Africa together before Stanley returned home in 1877 with many stories of their adventures. His subsequent books about African exploration made him famous throughout Europe and America. He continued exploring until 1890 when ill health forced him to retire from active exploration work; however, he remained an influential figure until his death in 1904 at age 63.
