Martinus Rorbye Collection

Martinus Rorbye (17 May 1803 – 13 November 1848) was a Danish painter and printmaker. He is best known for his landscapes, seascapes, and scenes from everyday life in Copenhagen. He was born in Copenhagen to a family of merchants and studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1818 to 1825. After graduating, he traveled extensively throughout Europe, visiting Italy, France, Germany and England. His work was greatly influenced by the works of Jens Juel and Nicolai Abildgaard as well as Dutch painters such as Jacob van Ruisdael. Upon returning to Denmark in 1830 he became one of the most important members of the Golden Age art movement known as the “Danish Golden Age” which flourished between 1800-1850. He is remembered for his use of light effects to capture atmospheric conditions in his paintings which often depicted scenes from everyday life around Copenhagen including fishermen on boats or people walking along city streets.
