Jusepe de Ribera Collection

Jusepe de Ribera was a Spanish painter and printmaker of the Baroque period. He was born in 1591 in Játiva, near Valencia, and died in Naples in 1652. His work is characterized by its intense realism, with strong chiaroscuro effects and dramatic compositions. He is known for his religious works as well as his mythological paintings. His style was influenced by Caravaggio, who he met while living in Rome from 1616 to 1620. During this time he also studied the works of Annibale Carracci and Guido Reni. After returning to Spain he moved to Naples where he remained until his death, producing some of his most famous works such as “The Martyrdom of St Bartholomew” (1631) and “The Flagellation of Christ” (1632). His influence can be seen throughout Europe during the Baroque period, particularly through artists like Velázquez who were inspired by him.
